Epilepsies are diseases or disorders of the brain which cause reoccurring seizures. It is a spectrum disease comprised of many diagnoses including an ever-growing number of rare epilepsies. There are many different types of seizures and varying levels of seizure control. 


• 3.4 million Americans are living with epilepsies, including 470,000 children.

• 1/3 of people with epilepsy live with uncontrolled seizures and many experience challenges affording and accessing needed treatments in a timely manner.

• Epilepsy and/or seizures impose an annual economic healthcare burden of at least $54 Billion.

The bipartisan Congressional Epilepsy Caucus was launched in February 2023 for the House of Representatives and in February 2024 for the Senate with the aim of bringing together Members of Congress to raise awareness about the epilepsies and implement meaningful policies. This effort will continue to elevate the voice of the epilepsy community in the nation’s capital.

Caucus Objectives

  • ​Raising awareness in Congress about the many causes of epilepsy and the needs of people living with the epilepsies 

  • Providing Seizure First Aid training to Congressional Staff and the Capitol Hill community

  • Protecting crucial health care coverage policies like Medicare’s Six Protected Classes and improving coverage of needed health care services, treatments, and devices 

  • Advancing surveillance, research, data and innovation to better understand and treat the epilepsies

  • Protecting the rights of people with the epilepsies 

  • Promoting the needs of people with the epilepsies through legislation, appropriations, and policy
